Freelance, focused, and still learning

A year ago, after 20 odd years (!) working in house, I started working with my first freelance marketing client.

Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a great range of clients, from small start ups to established institutions, covering everything from financial advice and fintech to asset management, insurance, and not-for-profit organisations.

It’s been a year of learning, growing, and rediscovering what I value most about work and the people I work with. Here are a few of the key lessons I’ve taken away so far.

Each sector has its own language and its own energy

One of the areas that I have enjoyed most about the last year has been the constant learning. Each project has introduced me to a new world of acronyms, regulations, and ways of thinking.

I’ve seen how innovation and speed can redefine what’s possible. I’ve been reminded of the power of structure, rigour, and trust. And through my work with not-for-profits, I’ve experienced the impact of purpose-driven communication and collaboration.

Each sector has its quirks, but the common thread is people – both professionals and volunteers supporting not-for-profits,  who care deeply about what they do and the outcomes they create.

Culture matters

When you move between teams and companies, you quickly learn to spot what makes a positive working culture.

It’s rarely about the perks or policies, it’s more about how people treat each other. The best environments I’ve worked in share a few key traits:

  • Clarity: Everyone knows what success looks like and they work together to achieve this.

  • Trust: Freelancers are brought in as partners, not outsiders.

  • Positivity: Teams celebrate wins, learn from challenges, and keep perspective.

A supportive culture doesn’t just make work more enjoyable,  it makes it more productive and creative too.

Surround yourself with creative, entrepreneurial people

The last year has opened doors to conversations and collaborations that I haven’t experienced in traditional roles. I’ve met some truly creative, entrepreneurial individuals,  people who are happy to experiment and create new solutions in their fields.

I have found working with individuals like these hugely inspiring and their curiosity & energy contagious.

Keep learning and building connections

Every project in the last year has taught me something new, whether about industries, people, or broadening my marketing expertise.

Freelance, focused, and still learning!

Looking ahead, I’m excited to keep exploring new sectors, collaborating with brilliant people, and contributing to meaningful work,  wherever it may come from.
